Envisioning PMO & Project Management through a Juggler’s Eye : Part 1

The Nonpareil of the Project Managers is in the way they express through their communication, planning, coordination, persuasiveness, and attitude. The Project managers are the “Jugglers” because “Jugglers” can adroitly manage multiple activities simultaneously. So, as the Project Managers are, they are the best strategist in this entire universe; apart from this, the planning and coordination of a Project Manager is always class apart. The problem with Project Managers and the Project Management Office role is that they are always treated as overhead and always underrated. To summarize, they are the underdog, who can hold the flag until the fort’s last brick, but they have never been treated similarly. I have always been trying to change the leaders’ mindset and thoughts through my articles so far. This book will run through all those articles and help you feel my thoughts, experience, knowledge, and perspective on Project Management and PMO.

Envisioning PMO & Project Management through a Juggler’s Eye: Part-1 by Abhishek Mishra
    Ratings:- 4.3/5

    My take:
The author is no stranger to terms such as leadership and positivity as both of them tends to remain the major founding stones of the literary works spawned by him, as namely being:-“Stereotypical Leadership” and β€œThe Book of Powerful & Exceptional Quotes”. Hailing as a project manager, the effects of the position is fairly well reflected in the literary work that is to be reviewed today. The author has poignantly laid down all the practical steps that are required to manage things efficiently and the gravity of the same is bound to be heightened when it comes to setting up a PMO
Calling the book and the attempts of the author as a simulation of the working of PMO would not be a misnomer as the same is a work of fiction, however what really becomes the deciding factor is the level of exactitude that the suggested framework achieves and the same is plausible enough as the chapters whose heading include:-β€œ How to Set up a PMO, Key PMO Roles and Responsibilities, What is Project Governance and The Process to Create an Effective Governance Framework, Aligning Project Management with Business Strategy etc”. All these tend to be the heart of the matter of the book and what really stands out is the inclusiveness that it has to offer as the β€œManagement Quotient” is something that remains common as managing a PMO remains as convoluted as one may think, however the guiding principles are fairly well instilled in the reader and thus this book is a must read for anyone

This High-Impact PMO book is one of the most inspiring and impactful books ever written for PMOs. The book offers extraordinarily practical tips and knowledge, and effective advice on establishing and improving Project Management Office. You can easily read and learn survival lessons about the habits of successful PMOs that will advance your experience in the project management realm. The author does an excellent job breaking the subject down into an informative, well-written guide with tips that are easy to understand and follow.

A novice can effortlessly comprehend the material, and this actually one of the most valuable aspects of this book. Instead of diving right into the action items, he devotes the entire few chapters to a discussion about what a PMO is, why you need it, the roles and responsibilities. In other words, he starts at the beginning! And, while this may sound like a common sense approach, many books of this nature assume the reader is already an expert, which is not often the case. It’s also important to note that the information provided is not speculative, but actual real-life examples of what works, based on the author’s experience and expertise in this field. This is a very nicely written book that is full of very good information for the project manager and management officer.

I read a totally different book that is based on PMO (Project Management Office).
Firstly, let me tell you about PMO in brief.
A Project Management Office, abbreviated to PMO, a group or department in an enterprise that establishes and implements best practices and maintains standards related to project management, planning and execution. The PMO strives to standardize and introduce economies of repetition in the execution of projects. The PMO also serves as an organization’s central hub for project documentation, guidance and success metrics.

I read about this for the very first time and enjoyed it a lot.
Author has discussed his life experiences to make the reader understand about what he is talking. This is not a fiction which I love the most but Author seems to have worked very much hard for this book. He has even discussed the questions he asked in the brainstorming session.
He has discussed about the domain of work, which is usually what a PMO does including Standards, methodologies and processes.
It tells a lot about Project/program delivery management, Portfolio management, Talent management, Governance & performance management.

    Various topics that I liked:
    β€’Hybrid Project management
β€’How to set up a PMO
β€’What are the responsibilities of a PMO
    β€’About the teams of PMO
    β€’KPI (key performance indicator)
β€’Difference between PMO and EPMO (Enterprise Project Management Office)

He has also discussed few things that every Project manager must know which include COMMON PROJECT MANAGEMENT MISTAKES, TIPS FOR MANAGING THE PROJECT BUDGET, ETC.

Author has tried his best to make the reader understand each and every line written in the book. He has shared some tables, flowcharts and even mind maps to help the reader.

    About the Author:

Envisioning PMO & Project Management through a Juggler’s Eye: Part-1 is his 3rd book.
His first book β€” The Book of Powerful & Exceptional Quotes
His Second book – Stereotypical Leadership

I wish him good luck for his future endeavours:)

Envisioning PMO & Project Management through a Juggler’s Eye is a book that explains the different aspects of being a better project manager beginning from setting up a PMO to transforming one mindset in being a better and best project manager. The most interesting question that arises while reading the book is that what does exactly β€œP” stand for in PMO. Well on a personal level I tried to guess it as potential. But after reading I realized there could be more unexplored alternatives like program, portfolio, project, pioneer and power. The book also covers the part of digital transformation explaining the detail framework of its working. Beginning from customer experience and ranging to digital technology integration, some of the points that this framework has, are – operational agility, culture and leadership and workforce enablement.
According to the book following are the key considerations that are followed by good governance and that are – equitability and inclusivity, accountability and responsibility and naked transparency.
The author himself being a project manger has tried to relate his work roles with real life examples as of cooking meals and clearly says that being a project manager he often feels at the loneliest of places and someone who is up late at night sweating over a project that is running late, working over the weekends, when the rest are enjoying with their friends and family.

To conclude, I would like to say that in order to become a better project team the key points that they should imbibe in them are listening more than talking and designing a work space culture. Well, there are 2 more points to this, so read yourself to find more.

I came across a copy of ‘Envisioning PMO and Project management through a Juggler’s Eye’ By Abhishek Mishra from MCMV bookstore,
and hailing from a science background was intrigued to know more about the subject scope. I wondered whether our concepts of project handling are explained in the same way!
What I liked most about the book is that apart from elucidating terminologies and illustrations, it also encourages the reader to think about the concepts by introducing Q&A sections as well as chapters dedicated to limitations, debatable aspects and comparisons.
Lucid writing with a cohesive presentation, it’s quite easy for readers from all walks of life to quickly gain an idea about PMOs.

Some of the chapters have a quirky twist- from the parallels with cooking a meal to explaining the Spotify model and blending in quantum physics, it lends respite to the otherwise factual and informative text.

A thumbs up for the efforts by the author for compilation of the information in this book. Quite an informative read.

Envisioning PMO and Project Management through a Juggler’s Eyes by Abhishek Mishra – It is one of the most informative books I’ve come across ever since I am self-employed.
Being a one woman army at work, I’ve always struggled with the learning and growing aspect of my business. When I came across this book, I knew I had to pick it up.

The author has perfectly put everything in points. The content is very well researched and curated. It’s mentioned that the author has compiled 24 out of 46 of his articles about PMO in this book.

All the major aspects of PMO have been covered in great detail. The infographics and illustrations were a great help to me while understanding each topic, hailing from a completely different background.

The best part of the book was that it is open to interpretation. The author doesn’t limit the readers by defining the meaning of the abbreviation PMO, he rather pushes us to interpret it ourselves by giving a ton of options and then helping the reader understand each of them. This widened my approach to the topic even better.

There are a lot of practically knowledgeable points penned down in each chapter which help us understand the structure in a Project Management Office.

The book also explains how to become a better Project Manager and how to identify and discover the qualities of being a CEO in you.

It was a wonderfully informative read for me. Took a lot of notes and learnt a lot from this book.
